The WA Upper House conscience vote against cloning shows the debate has matured and is now turning in favour of the facts rather than false promises of cures, said The Nationals Senator Ron Boswell today.
Anything the cloners want to achieve can already be achieved with the science to hand, whether it be study of diseases or work on therapeutic treatment using stem cells. There is simply no need to clone to get the results needed by patients and medical researchers.
International debate on these issues has moved further and further towards the realistic gains already demonstrated by stem cells from the patients own body. This is the direction of the future which is reflected in the WA vote.
I congratulate the Members of WAs Upper House who voted against cloning. It is not an easy thing to do when some still falsely believe that cloning will deliver cures to a terminally ill relative or friend.
The facts are that cloning as a scientific research tool delivers more problems than cures, except for investors trying to capture intellectual capital.
Senator Boswell said that if debate in the federal Parliament and the other states was just beginning at this stage, the outcome of cloning legislation would be very different.
There is more information available now and many former cloning advocates have changed their views completely on cloning.
